“NEW THERAPIES IN THE 21ST CENTURY: CHALLENGES FOR HOSPITAL PHARMACY”
From medieval times there has been a close connection between pharmacy skills and the range of therapies available for the patient. The earliest pharmacopoeias described what were to be generally accepted “active ingredients” in combination with recommendations on how to handle them and ways to formulate them into ready-to-use medicines. The challenge for the pharmacist in those days was to conduct the preparation of medicines under public control at the town hall when unicorn, gold or other precious potent ingredients were believed to be essential for the clinical result.
Basic history has not changed over the years, but the players in the games have increased both in number and in professional background.
New therapies come to the hospital pharmacy and are today an important factor in the develop-ment of the present and future daily life of pharmacists. Complex therapies, including drugs with many targets and in some cases designed for individual metabolism of the single patient, form a part of the future, together with individual treatments put up close to the patient’s bedside.
New skills in hospital pharmacy production are demanded and, at the same time, documentation and quality assurance according to European rules for GMP are mandatory tools for the hospital pharmacy.
Managing the costs of expensive drugs is a well-known chapter in the book of the pharmacy man-ager. However, the demand for transparency in the purchasing process comes now not only from the hospital director but also from other players, including both industry and EU regulation.
Are we as pharmacists in the new Europe ready for this development?
