PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME
CONGRESS THEME: “Hospital Pharmacy and Economyâ€
An important characteristic of every system of healthcare provision is that there exists in principle an endless demand of care versus limited resources. If one looks at the component of pharmaceuticals, this feature is even more prominent. Moreover, the ongoing introduction of new and more sophisticated drugs are likely to result in disproportionate claims on the healthcare budget. On average some 10% of a national drug-budget is being spent in the hospital, with hospital pharmacists in charge of acquisition and dispensing. The demand for more resources will increase because:
- the average life expectancy in Europe will increase;
- the increase of costs due to the introduction of new technologies
- the increased appreciation of health and healthcare provision by European citizens.
We expect that the hospital pharmacist needs more and more economic and financial managerial skills to be able to bear the responsibility for the ever increasing drug-budgets in hospitals. For this reason, the Scientific Committee of the EAHP Congress has chosen economy in relation with hospital pharmacy as the theme for its 10th annual congress.
