Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) a public/private partnership
In 2004, a pan-European public/private partnership was created between the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations and the EU Commission, under the 2006 6th Framework. The Innovative Medicines Initiative supports the discovery and development of better medicines, to enhance Europe’s competitiveness in this field. The IMI proposes practical paths to accelerate progress on innovative medicines with fewer side effects, for the benefit of patients.
In a detailed document entitled “The Innovative Medicines Initiative Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), Creating Biomedical R&D Leadership for Europe to Benefit Patients and Society”, the partnership proposes four strategic areas (“pillars”) that address the principal causes of delay in the biomedical research and development (R&D) process.
