About Paris
Located in the north bending arc of the river Seine, Paris is the symbol of French culture. The charm of this city attracts more than 30 million visitors every year, which makes it the most visited city in the world. Among its most important monuments, the Eiffel Tower (19th century), the Napolenic Arc de Triomphe, the 12th century Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Louvre Museum are must-see sights that will take you back in time through different periods of the history of France.
From The Belle Epoque starting in 1890 to Les années folles (the Roaring Twenties), Paris is a beacon of cultural influence and perhaps nowhere more so than around the area of Montmartre, home of the outstanding Basilica of Sacré-Coeur. The numerous cafés of this area have always welcomed many great artists such as the singer, Edith Piaf, as well as famous painters, Monet and Renoir. It is a pleasure to behold, painters still setting up their easels in the Place du Tertre, reminding us of the time when Paris was the cradle of modern art. Visit The Pompidou Centre, another prominent monument symbolising contemporary architecture in Paris, and you will discover the largest modern art museum in Europe.
Besides being a key location for artists, Paris has always inspired intellectuals. The strongest movement of new ideas and knowledge sharing took place at the Age of Enlightenment during the 18th century, from where originates Paris’ famous nickname, The City of Light. Later, from the post- Second World War era, all philosophers, writers but also actors and musicians have met in Saint Germain des Prés where masterpieces of French literature were born such as La Comédie Humaine by Honoré de Balzac and Les Misérables by Victor Hugo. As a literary and intellectual centre, the city of Paris also hosts the most prestigious French academic institutions such as La Sorbonne and the Paris Institute of Political Studies.
Considered as one of the global centres of fashion and design, Paris is home to the finest and most luxurious fashion designers. Chanel, Christian Dior, Yves Saint-Laurent along with many others, are mainly located in the beautiful avenue of The Champs Elysées and the Place Vendôme which is also reputed to house the most important jewelry houses in the world. The Paris region is one of the wealthiest areas in Europe and its economy has a growing service sector which has its heart in the financial business district, La Défense. Built in the suburbs of Paris due to a lack of space in town, you will see there the highest skyscrapers of the city.
Paris is so loved by tourists due to its many faces; a prestigious city animated by a very festive soul in its most popular areas. Its numerous theatres, the cabarets of Pigalle, such as the famous the Moulin Rouge, as well as its stylish cafés and renowned restaurants are really part of its cultural tradition and make Paris the city of entertainment. If you have not been there yet, we then warmly invite you to sample the Parisian (night) life at some point during the 18th congress of the EAHP.
