EAHP: Apps involving medicines should have pharmacist oversight

The European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) has responded to a consultation by the European Commission advising that any mHealth applications linked to the use of medicines must have levels of regulatory oversight, ideally involving pharmacist expertise, in order to ensure their safety.

The European Commission launched a consultation on mHealth in April 2014, asking healthcare professionals and patients for input on the health related applications of smartphone technology. One of EAHP’s key points was that the introduction of new technologies in the hospital setting has been an ever-present reality. Lessons learned include the need to understand the potential positive applications of a new technology at an early stage, and for Governments and health system managers to take a leadership role in achieving their realisation.

World Health Organisation launch consultation on antimicrobial resistance

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has opened a public consultation to help guide the creation of a draft Global action plan to address antimicrobial resistance. The consultation closes on 1 September 2014.

The 76th World Health Assembly passed a resolution earlier this year calling on WHO to lead the development of a Global action plan to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and submit a draft plan to the 2015 World Health Assembly.
Through this consultation, WHO is seeking the views and contributions of all relevant organisations, institutions, networks, civil society bodies, national authorities and ministries, and other entities that can represent the views of stakeholders or interest groups.

In this first stage, WHO will seek contributions to help draft the Global action plan. Later, comments will be sought on a finalised version of the plan.

EJHP: Unintentional non-adherence to phosphate binders

An original research article published in the online first edition of the European Journal of Hospital Pharmacy shares the results of a study to determine patient specific perceptual and practical barriers to adherence to phosphate binders. The second stage of the study aimed to determine the effectiveness of an adherence enhancing strategy trialled by patients.
